Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, is a volatile, flammable, and colorless liquid commonly found in alcoholic beverages. Its chemical formula is C₂H₅OH, and it is classified as an alcohol due to its hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to a carbon atom. Ethanol is produced naturally through the fermentation of sugars by yeast and can also be synthesized from petrochemical processes.
Apart from its role in beverages, ethanol is widely used as a fuel or fuel additive in internal combustion engines, known as bioethanol when derived from biomass. It serves as a solvent in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and cleaning products, and is used as a disinfectant due to its antimicrobial properties.
